FAQ HARD DISK DRIVES (All disks)

1. My disk is not recognized by the computer, what to do?

In a first time, you should plug the product on USB port located at the back of your PC. (supply stability).

UNDER WINDOWS 98:

Try to install the drivers of the HDD (If they exist, you will find them on the page of your disk).

UNDER WINDOWS XP:

Go to the device manager.
Delete the yellow exclamation point which designates your device.
Restart your system.
Your disk is now recognized.
If it doesn’t work yet, try a manual installation: precise the file directory C:Windowsinf and click next to end the searching of the drivers
(sometimes you have to do this manipulation several times, or try to reinstall drivers inserting the CD of WINDOWS XP SP2).

UNDER VISTA:

Vista already contains drivers for the DISK (USB drive).
But like every new OS of Windows (in particular basic OS) they are some problem, in particular with USB peripheral.
Try to make an update of your OS, or to contact Microsoft or your computer manufacturer.

However, here is an advice which can help you to install the disk (as removable disk) manually:
In fact, the required driver that is useful for the recognizing of your USB device is already contained in Vista. But you must to define the path manually.
For this doing, choose "search a driver on my computer (advanced)" during the installation, and give the information "C:WINDOWSwinsxs".
Click on 'next' until the end of the installation.

Your USB device is successfully installed and can be used now.

If the DISK is still not recognized, try the same manipulation, but this time specify the path "C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32" (You probably have to repeat this procedure many times for a complete installation of the USB device).

If the problem persists after trying the previous manipulations and after Windows VISTA updates, try to plug the disk on another computer. If the problem still occurs please contact your reseller to proceed for an exchange of your disk.

If the disk is well recognized on another computer and not on yours, please contact the Microsoft support who will help you to solve this problem of Operating System.

2. How to format my Hard Disk Drive ?

Note: You can format your external disk as you wish, but be careful, some multimedia disks as the SO SPEAKY does not support other formatting as the original. Please check this information in the corresponding FAQ (FAQ proper to the disk model) in this page. For example the multimedia part of the SO SPEAKY only supports disk in FAT32 format. And the FAT32 format from Windows does not support files above 32GB. If you have accidentally formatted the disk, please contact us (fill the form at the bottom of this page). FORMATTING OF HARD DISK DRIVE:
Make a right click on the letter that designates your device.
Select ‘format’ and then ‘FAT32’ or ‘NTFS’.

If you wish to format your disk into NTFS and that your Windows version does not allow doing by this way (NTFS is not contained in the field of formatting by Windows), make the following manipulation:

1. Select ‘Execute’ from the le menu ‘start’
2. Type cmd then click on OK
3. In the command window type: convert f:/fs:ntfs
Note: Adapt the letter of your peripheral to the one that designates your USB device!
The most of the time, the letter ‘C’ designates your hard disk; make sure to format the good device.

3. Why the capacity of the disk is not the same as the capacity announced?

The capacity that you see is normal.
The capacity of the USB keys is define like follow : 1MB = 1.000.000 bytes.
Whereas 1 MB under windows XP is equivalent to 1024*1024 bytes.
If we consider a capacity of 512.000.000 bytes, your Windows will convert it to MB.
So if we have initially 512 MB, it will appear 512000000/(1024*1024) ~488 MB after format.

So if we have initially 500GB, it will appear 500 000 000 000 / (1024 x 1024) = 476 Go under Windows.

4. I cannot access to my data into the disk, how to retrieve data?

It exists several utilities (free) to retrieve data from your disk. You will find them easily on the web.
In last it exists some firms specialized for it, but it has a cost.

5. When a file is transferred on my disk, the PC indicates that the file is too big or it makes an error, then the transfer stops, why?

You disk is certainly formatted in FAT32, but the FAT32 does not manage files above 4GB. Format your disk in NTFS in order to allow the management of these big files.

Note : You can format your external disk as you wish, But be careful, some multimedia disks as the SO SPEAKY does not support other formatting as the original.

6. I wish to activate the warranty of my SO SPEAKY, how can I do?

Any exchange of products is done through your reseller, you will need your sales receipt (without proof of purchase, the warranty may not be in place). We advise preciously making all manipulations suggested into this FAQ page to troubleshoot your disk.

UNDER VISTA:
Check that the sharing under VISTA is correctly set. Indeed the SO SMART is seen as a 'guest' by the PC, so the guest account must be in place on the PC.

Set the guest account:
Log on your PC as administrator and go to the user control panel - make sure the guest account is enabled as limited (if not modify the type of account and select 'standard'). Under Vista it is not sure that the guest account is activated by default, you may have to create it.

And then go to the configuration panel, then 'networking and sharing'.
Select 'private network'. Click on 'next' and then on 'close'

In 'sharing and discovery', activate all options except password protection.

Set the sharing:
To set the sharing make a right click on the folder or the disk and then click on 'share'
Click on advanced share and tick 'share this folder'.
Click on ‘authorization’ to manage sharing accesses, select the type of authorization sharing wished

You will recognize the name of your network, a percentage is also indicated (identify correctly the name of your network!).
If the percentage is low as 30% or less, it means that the SO SMART is too far from the router or that too many obstacles impede the connection. In this case make the test of the wireless connection closer to the router.

Note: Always choose 'channel': auto in the menu. To exit the list of network displayed after an autoscan, push on the button 'return' of the remote control of the SO SMART

3. If the Wireless network is still not seen by the SO SMART, make several 'scan ESSID' until you obtain a good signal.
Place the antenna at different positions; make an autoscan at each position to check the reception quality. For the antenna, choose a vertical position by default. Then made left-right movements on the air, not from front to back. At each position of the antenna, validate an 'auto scan'.

WIFI NETWORK NOT DETECTED or SIGNAL IS TOO LOW:
If you meet problems for the WIFI reception, or that the WIFI signal is low even when the SO SMART is placed near to the router.
Despite of the previous manipulations, please contact us, precising the number with 12 figures that begins by
D3C0608XXXXX or SS080321XXXXX,...
You will find these numbers on the packaging of under the SO SMART product.

4. Once the WIFI network is detected, set the Wireless security, select WPA or WEP regarding the encryption mode of your WIFI router. If the WPA is selected, then choose the following parameter: TKIP or EAS (also regarding the router encryption mode).

5. And then enter the network key in the appropriate field, move the cursor on OK when you have entered the key and push on 'ENTER' of the SO SMART remote control.
Validate all network parameters. For this doing place the cursor on 'APPLY' and push on the button 'ENTER' of the SO SMART remote control.
