FAQ ZPEN
» PRECAUTIONS FOR USE:

Replacement of the pen’s ink refill

It is a standard ink refill Schmitt 628 (or equivalent).

To retrieve it, grasp the end of the mine and pull it off it directly.

Warning: Do not unscrew the part where the mine is! This can cause damage to the pen.

Transporting the ZPEN, take care of it!

By observing the ZPEN closer, you will notice that receptors (these small grey grids on the front of the base of the ZPEN) are protected by small bars, and the sensor of the pen is protected by the crystal cone where the ink refill is located.
To ensure a correct ultrasound transmission between the pen and receiver, sensors need a free field of communication between them, they are not totally covered.

Warning ! The cone leaving free the field communication, small objects can pass through it (the circumference alternates between air holes and material). This cone is not an absolute protection; Always protect the pen with its cap when you do not use it.

Take care also to do not to damage the little grid on the receiver (microphones). When transporting the ZPEN, all sort of little objects (card or key in a pocket for example) can come into the grid and make shocks, so PRESERVE THE ZPEN BY SLIDING IT INTO A BOX, BAG LEATHER...

Note: DANE-ELEC will not be liable for any material damage resulting from poor care given to the ZPEN product. The guarantee can not be applicable in case of malfunction due to improper maintenance of the product.

Timing charge of the receiver

It is highly advisable to conduct a full charge of the receiver (6 hours) for the first use of ZPEN.
By this way you will maximize its autonomy for the future.

GENERAL USE OF THE ZPEN:

1. Where can I find the user manual of the ZPEN?

You can download the quick start guide of the Zpen (click on the link)

2. How to access to my handwritten notes digitized?

Your notes are saved in the MyNote directory (receiver). Plug the receiver on the USB port of your PC and then open the file ‘notexxx.eli’ using the software MyScriptNote, PEN & INK Viewer or NoteSearch (please refer to the respective manual for a detailed explanation)

3. How to delete my handwritten notes digitized?

Select the file NoteXXX.ELI located in the directory MyNote. Right-click and then delete the file you want. You will not be able to access this file, so think about save it on your PC before delete your files, if you want to keep a copy.

4. Is the ZPEN compatible with the systems MAC and LINUX?

All files generated by the ZPEN can be viewed on MAC OS X and several versions of Linux (see section INK PEN & VIEWER on this FAQ), but there is no conversion software available today for these systems.

5. How to know the meaning of the receiver’s lights?

To know the exact meaning of lights on the receiver's, please consult the full user manual of the ZPEN (manual is downloadable at the bottom of this page).

6. Is there any indication whether the flash memory receiver is missing?

Yes, the right light starts to blink rapidly when the memory lacks (Attention: this light can indicates a low battery too, to distinguish these two signals, know that the speed of blinking is faster when the memory is full).

7. How to change the page with the ZPEN?

Operate the clamp located below the receiver when it is turned on. Once the clamp is released, the middle LED indication lights up during 0.5 seconds, this indicates a change of page.

8. How many pages of notes can be memorized by the ZPEN?

The ZPEN can store hundreds of files of several pages (about 300KB per file).

9. When and how to charge the receiver?

The receiver shall be charged during 6 hours for an optimal use.
To charge the receiver, plug it into the USB port of your PC (Read ‘precautions for use’ for a first charge!).
The light right blinks when the receiver needs to be charged. When the charge is ended, the light stops blinking.

10. When do I replace the batteries of the pen? What model of batteries to use?

A signal is communicated visually by the receiver when the battery of the pen is low.
Indeed, when the pen’s battery is low, the light located in the middle of the receiver blinks without you write (only hold the pen in the A4 area). So you know that you have to change its batteries soon.
Two 393 standard batteries (watch batteries) are needed to supply the pen.

Note: To obtain the low battery signal from the receiver, it is necessary that the pen is located in the A4 area and that it is visible by the receiver.

11. What type of ink refill for my Zpen? How to replace it?

It is a standard ink refill type Schmitt 628 (or equivalent).
Please see "Precautions for use" to avoid causing damage to the product when your replace the ink refill.

12. When I use a ruler to draw lines, they encroach on writing when I see it on my PC, why?

This is normal. Indeed, when you draw lines with a ruler, your hand is positioned differently in relation to your habit of writing (for example we often hold the pen inclined).
To underline a word or draw a table, hold your hand as when you write (hold it in the same way).

13. I am left-handed, can I use the ZPEN?

Yes and a simple solution is to attach the receiver at the bottom of the paper rather than at the top. When you will see your notes on your computer, you can rotate the sheet through one of the software provided with the ZPEN.

14. Can I use the ZPEN as a mouse on my PC?

No, this application is not available with the ZPEN.

Yes. The current version allows two or more users to sit next to each other and work without worrying for interferences.

16. Does the ZPEN work in a noisy environment?

Generally speaking, yes, it does; Zpen technology knows how to ignore out-of-band noises (generated below 25Khz and above 80Khz) and implements “smart” algorithms to deal with in-band noises (25-80Khz).

MYSCRIPTNOTE (Conversion software):

1. Why use MyScriptNote software?

MyScriptNotes is an application which allow to convert handwritting notes with a system of capture writing text with great accuracy.

MyScriptNote can also convert forms and tables drawn with your notes.
You can correct and refine the proposed text directly through the MyScriptNote software.
Once corrected, the result can be sent to Microsoft Word or rich text format or to your email application.
MyScriptNote is able to handle notes written in several languages.
You can also create your own profile for adaptation, so MyScriptNote can be use for a better recognition of your personal writing.

2. Where to find the MyScriptNote software?

The setup directory of MyScriptNote is situated into the receiver of the ZPEN.
Go to the folder "MyScriptNoteInstall" and then launch the file "Setup.exe".
If the software can not be installed, please consult the question n°4.

3. Which operating system support the MyScriptNote software?

The conversion software is compatible Windows 2000/XP/VISTA. The conversion is not possible in other systems such as Linux or MAC (however, you can view your handwritten notes and save them. For more information see the section PEN & INK VIEWER).

4. I can’t install the software MyScriptNote, the setup failed or does not launch, what can I do ?

Check that your system well supports the MyscriptNote software (it works under Windows 2000/XP/VISTA).
Try to install the software after having copied the complete folder on your computer (the error can come from a launch from the USB key (receiver).
If the problem still occurs, please contact us at the following address in order to solve this problem: tech@dane-elec.fr.

Note :Only one version of MyScriptNote is usable with the ZPEN, this is the one contained into the receiver. If you can’t conclude the registration of your key, please contact us at the address tech@dane-elec.fr or send to us a fax for this request (the form is available into the receiver of the ZPEN,
it is named « MyScriptNotesRegistrationNoInternet.pdf »)

6. How to export my text in Word file?

Install and launch the software MyScriptNote. At the top of the right window that appears, select the icon which represent the document format that you wish to obtain.
There are three possible choices: Word, plain text (Notepad), mail.

Note: You can also save your manuscript files in PNG. / BMP. / JPEG. / GIF with the software PEN INK & VIEWER, tab "page" and "save page as ..." (but without convert them).

7. Does the Zpen recognize abbreviations?

When using the software "MyScriptNote", you can customize your own profile for the recognizing of abbreviation.
Go to tab « conversion » and « personnal dictionnary ».
You should consult the software guide of MyScriptNote to learn more tips (« help » in the MyScriptNote software or MyScriptNote manual into the receiver).

8. How to improve the handwritting recognition?

It is advised to create your own profile for the adaptation (under MyScriptNote). For this doing go to the tab ‘conversion’ and then ‘recognition profile’. Take a regular handwriting and do not block the communication between the pen and the receiver.

MyScript Notes has excellent accuracy rates on cursive and printed handwriting but there are some things that you can do to improve the conversion accuracy:

DON'T CROSS OUT OR INSERT LETTERS: MyScript Notes will try to interpret crossing out as text and will have trouble understanding characters squashed into words at the last minute.

SPACE WORDS CORRECTLY: Characters that are too cramped together cause conversion difficulties.
The solution: leave sufficient space between words, and between characters and punctuation
marks like brackets or separators.

TAKE CARE WITH THE SIZE OF YOUR WRITING: You will run into problems if:
- letters are too inconsistent in height within the one word (letters that are too big might be interpreted as drawings!)
- words vary noticeably in height on the same page.
The solution: try to keep letters a reasonable size (for example, a capital letter should measure between 0.5 and 1 cm on digital paper) and to write with a consistent height.

BEWARE OF SLANTING : If your writing is exaggeratedly slanted, you may have recognition difficulties (although this is quite rare: MyScriptNotes allows for a fairly deep slant). Likewise if a line of handwriting runs too far up or down horizontally (Notes may think you are writing on another line!).
The solution: write horizontally in a straight line.

PEN & INK VIEWER (To see your notes):

1. How to save files with the software PEN & INK Viewer? In which format?

You can save your handwritten notes in .PNG / .BMP / .JPEG / .GIF format with the software PEN&INK Viewer, tab ‘page’ then ‘sage page as’ or directly into PDF through the tab file then ‘save as PDF’.

2. How to save my notes in PDF format?

Launch the software PEN & INK Viewer, go to the tab ‘file’ and then ‘save as PDF’.

3. How to set up the internal clock of the ZPEN?

Connect the receiver into the USB port of your computer, and then launch the software PEN&INK Viewer. Go to the tab ‘Tools’ and then go to ‘set clock’. Follow the instructions which appear into the new window.

TROUBLESHOOTING:

1. My computer does not recognize the ZPEN after having plugged it into the USB port, what to do?

Try to make a hard reset of your ZPEN, for this doing insert a sharp object into the hole situated below the receiver. Connect the receiver on the USB port again. If the ZPEN is still not recognized, it is possible that the problem is due to a problem of drivers on your Operating System.

In the most of case this is due to the Operating System configuration (USB recognition).
To solve the problem, in a first time you should plug the product on USB port located at the back of your PC (supply stability).

Under Windows XP:

1. Delete your ZPEN device in the device manager (can be represented as a yellow exclamation point)
2. Restart the system.
3. Connect your ZPEN. It must be recognized automatically.

Otherwise try to install your ZPEN manually, you have to precise the path c:windowsinf.

Another solution is to remove all USB drivers and to install them again. The CD of Windows XP is required for this:

To remove and reinstall all USB controllers, proceed as follows (CD XP required):

1. Click on Start, Control Panel, then Performance and Maintenance.
2. Click on System, then on the Hardware tab.
3. Click on the Device Manager button.
4. Develop USB bus controllers.
5. Right click on all peripheral USB bus controllers’ nodes, and then click on ‘’remove’’ to delete them one by one.
6. Restart the computer, then reinstall the USB Controllers (CD WINDOWS XP).
7. Plug the USB removable storage device (receiver of ZPEN) on the USB port, and then try to verify that the problem is solved.

If the ZPEN is not recognized even after all these manipulations, check that your ZPEN is not plugged before windows starts. Before connecting your key to your PC, make sure that all USB ports are well validated in the BIOS, and ensure that the starting of Windows is well ended (you must to see all icons on the desktop).

In last please contact Microsoft for further help concerning this problem of operating system.

Under VISTA:

Vista already contains drivers for USB devices.
But like every new OS of Windows (in particular basic OS) they are some problems, in particular with USB peripherals.
Try to make an update of your OS, or to contact Microsoft or your computer manufacturer.

However, here is an advice which can help you to install the ZPEN (as removable disk) manually:
In fact, the required driver that is useful for the recognizing of your USB device is already contained in Vista. But you must to define the path manually.
For this doing, choose "search a driver on my computer (advanced)" during the installation, and give the information "C:WINDOWSwinsxs".
Click on 'next' until the end of the installation.

Your USB device is successfully installed and can be used now.

If the ZPEN is still not recognized, try the same manipulation, but this time specify the path "C:WINDOWSSYSTEM32" (You probably have to repeat this procedure many times for a complete installation of the USB device).

If the ZPEN is well recognized on another computer and not on yours, please contact the Microsoft support who will help you to solve this problem of Operating System.

2. After using the ZPEN, I can’t see my notes (files do no exist), what to do?

If you have just purchased the ZPEN, retrieve the tab insulation from the battery compartment (see the quickstart manual for more precisions).
Make sure the '+' of batteries is well headed up, and that the receiver is well charged (at least 10 minutes for a minimum functioning). When you write, the middle light of the receiver should blink in the same time you write. If the middle light does not blink, make a hard reset of your ZPEN. For this doing insert a sharp object into the hole located below the receiver. Connect it on the USB port of your PC, try again to use the ZPEN. If after these manipulations the problem is still not resolved, change the batteries of the pen.

If the ZPEN still does not work, please contact your reseller to make an exchange of the ZPEN.

ATTENTION! If the functioning of the ZPEN is altered by a mishandling of it (see “precautions for use”), the product may not be exchanged.

3. After using my Zpen, I obtain straights or a vertical straight instead of handwriting (MyScriptNote/Pen&Ink Viewer).

Please make a reset of your Zpen. For this doing, switch ON the receiver and insert a sharp object into the hole localized below. If the problem still occurs, please contact your reseller to proceed for an exchange of the ZPEN (take the bill of your purchase with you).

ATTENTION! If the functioning of the ZPEN is altered by a mishandling of it (see “precautions for use”), the product may not be exchanged.

4. I have MyScriptNote and PEN&INK Viewer software but I don’t find NoteSearch.

NoteSearch is in process of finalization.
While registering you gave us your email, so we will send you the address to download the software when finalized.

5. The lights of the ZPEN’s receiver stay ON, or the receiver can not be turned ON, even after having charged it, What to do?

Please make a reset of your Zpen.
For this doing, switch ON the receiver and insert a sharp object into the hole localized below.
If the problem still occurs, please contact your reseller to proceed for an exchange of the ZPEN (take the bill of your purchase with you).

ATTENTION! If the functioning of the ZPEN is altered by a mishandling of it (see “precautions for use”), the product may not be exchanged.

6. When I plug the receiver on my computer, the charge indicator (light at right on the receiver) does not blink, why?

It could mean that the ZPEN is fully charged (light is turned ‘ON’ every time when the receiver is plugged) or that the USB port does not well supply the receiver to charge it correctly (light is turned OFF). If the receiver is not charged and that it can not be, or plug it on another USB port (at the rear of your PC), try to connect the receiver on another computer. If the problem still occurs, please contact your reseller to proceed for an exchange of the ZPEN (take the bill of your purchase with you).

ATTENTION! If the functioning of the ZPEN is altered by a mishandling of it (see “precautions for use”), the product may not be exchanged.

7. When I write, the pen down indicator (middle light) does not turn on, why?

Several factors might affect the reception of the pen’s transmission:
(i) there must be a clear line-of-sight between the pen and receiver.
(ii) also, look to see how you write; do not block the crystal cone (the transmission component) at the bottom part of the pen, hold the pen by the black ‘grip’.
(iii) low pen batteries, so change pen’s cells.

8. I have deleted my files into the receiver, can I recover them?

If you wish to recover your note and that you have deleted them, unfortunately you can’t recover them.
If you want to recover the setup file of MyScriptNote or PEN&IBNK Viewer, please contact us to the following mail address: tech@dane-elec.fr. User manuals are downloadable from this web page.
